Winter in Berlin is a time of holidays, seeing family and friends, and co-creating celebrations and rituals - old or new. In a city shaped by migration and marked by cultural friction, where over 53% of the residents were not born in the city, questions of arrival, identity, and coexistence shape everyday life. How can rituals and urban practices cultivate spaces of care and inclusion in times of polarization and fragmentation? Through memory mapping, spatial observation, and storytelling, students explore and develop their own personal stories, expressions, and ideas of belonging, documenting and visualizing them as part of a final collective output. Together, the seminar investigates the "living room" as both a domestic and urban condition. Open to students from architecture, urbanism, social and cultural studies, media, and the arts, the course welcomes those interested in questions of migration, identity, and space. An interest in creative or artistic practice is expected; prior knowledge of 3D and Adobe software (e.g. Rhino, AutoCAD, InDesign, or similar) is a big plus, as is an interest in photography. The semester culminates in a collective zine and the co-creation and hosting of our own "urban living room" in Berlin. The project results in a series of narrative, spatial, and participatory outputs that explore how belonging is experienced and co-created in Berlin.
