What is a Black feminist intervention and how does it shape space in the classroom, on the page, or on stage? How can we listen for forms of freedom in the institutional and personal archives of Black women? Which differences and convergences exist between African-American and Afro-German diasporas?

In this research group, we will discuss Black feminist theory and practices, engage with archival artifacts, and explore creative ways to do and write about research. After choosing a focus area (sound, performance/movement, image, or writing), students will conduct their own collaborative research in the archives of Audre Lorde and May Ayim, both located at Free University, and interact with an archival exhibition by a contemporary Berlin-based performing artist. The semester concludes with a public presentation of our multimedia research outputs.

The offering is especially suited for students in Theater/Dance/Film/Music/Sound Studies, Gender Studies, Area Studies, and (Art) History. Students should be willing and able to read texts in English. Students can conduct and present their own final research project in English or German. German language is also welcome for class discussions (if it works for everyone).
