What Makes a Friendly Space? The Role of Friendship in Navigating the City and Accessing Urban Spaces.
Johanna Bastian, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Sozialwissenschaften
Inhalte/ Contents
We all have, want or need friends. They are recognised to be important relations, yet research remains sparse. Following the spatial turn in the social sciences, this course asks where and how friendships take place while also considering societal power structures. Together, we will 1) engage with feminist and critical perspectives on friendship; 2) get to know qualitative methods to research personal relations and elicit spatial narratives; 3) implement small projects focusing on the role friendships play in place-making practices and access to urban spaces. Throughout the seminar, an emphasis will be on ethical questions, and we will reflect on practical challenges as well as our own positionalities in the research process. The course is aimed at advanced social sciences and geography students, interested in qualitative/spatial methodologies, ideally with prior experience working on empirical research projects. However, it is open to everyone motivated to engage with the topic.
