Space and territory in times of multiples: Case study of the Berlin's Kriminalitätsbelastete Orte
Dr. Nchoundoungam, Jonas Aubert, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Geographie
Inhalte/ Contents
This course examines the production of space and territorial control in contemporary cities through the lens of the so-called 'Berlin’s Kriminalitätsbelastete Orte' (KBOs), i.e. designated areas where police exercise extended powers due to perceived high crime rates. Framed by the concept of “multiples': multiple crises, actors, and rationalities, the course will explored how urban territories are produced, governed, racialised, and securitised. Through interdisciplinary readings from urban studies, geography, and critical criminology, students will analysed how KBOs reflect broader struggles over space, visibility, and power. The course emphasizes the lived experiences of affected communities, the legal and political frameworks enabling such zones, and the resistance they provoke. Students will develop critical tools to understand the spatial politics of contemporary urban governance in Berlin and beyond.
