Mood x Mind: Understanding Affective States and their Interaction with Cognitive Processes
Jochen Michely, Stella Berboth, Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin, Klinik für Psychotherapie (Department of Psychiatry and Neuroscience), Campus Charité Mitte (CCM)
Inhalte/ Contents
We all experience mood swings—feeling on top of the world one day and deeply saddened the next. While such fluctuations are part of everyday life, persistent or extreme mood changes are closely linked to psychiatric disorders such as depression or bipolar disorder. Experimental research on mood, however, is often limited by the lack of reliable and ecologically valid mood induction procedures. This student research project systematically evaluates both established and newly developed mood induction methods and investigates how experimentally induced mood states influence cognitive processes, particularly reward learning and decision-making. Students will formulate their own research questions, design and conduct experiments with healthy participants, and analyze behavioral and self-report data. Optional computational approaches, such as reinforcement learning models, may be applied. The project is suitable for students in Psychology, Neuroscience, Medicine, Social Sciences, or related fields.
