How do transgender families become legible, or illegible, to law, bureaucracy, and everyday institutions? This X-Student Research Group investigates how trans family, kinship, parenthood, and care are constructed, recognized, and contested in Berlin and Germany, and how belonging is granted, withheld, or fought for at these institutional borders. Using discourse analysis, we build and code a corpus of legal, policy, and advocacy materials in MAXQDA, drawing on queer/kinship theory and decolonial thought. Together we ask how documentation regimes, family norms, and care arrangements shape who counts as a parent, a partner, or a family, and we co-produce a Berlin Trans Kinship Dossier on recognition, care practices, documentation, and belonging, written for community organizations, policymakers, and researchers. The group includes a guest session from a trans/queer family organization and/or a scholar/academic working with rainbow families. Open to BA/MA students across the BUA, especially from sociology, gender studies, anthropology, law, social work, and health fields; also suited to anyone interested in queer and rainbow families more broadly. Participants should be familiar with intersectionality, queer theory, and basic qualitative methods; MAXQDA experience is recommended but not required. Working language is English; German reading skills are an asset.
