Language and power in Berlin through the lenses of the linguistic and semiotic landscape
Giulia Cabras, Freie Universität Berlin, Romanische Philologie (WE 5)
Inhalte/ Contents
This Research Group project examines the relationship between language and power in public spaces through linguistic landscape studies. By analyzing different types of signs, the project explores how languages, texts, and other discursive modalities reflect history, identity, and power structures, as well as how these structures are contested. Using Berlin as a case study, students will conduct fieldwork to investigate how language use in urban spaces reflects broader social and political dynamics. Working in groups, students will develop case studies, carry out fieldwork, and analyze collected data. The project equips students with analytical tools to examine topics related to language and society, multilingualism, and digital humanities methods. The Research Group is particularly open to Master’s and advanced Bachelor’s students from fields such as Linguistics, Sociolinguistics, Geography, Urban Studies, Area Studies, Anthropology, and related disciplines.
