This research group examines how power is produced, negotiated, and contested through the study of language and discourses in the urban space of Berlin. We investigate a wide range of public signs through a combined geosemiotic and ethnographic approach. While the first semester focused on interpreting signs as situated social artefacts, Language and Power in Berlin II aims to understand who produces signs and how signs are experienced. Students will conduct interviews with actors involved in the linguistic construction of urban space, including representatives of public institutions, associations, businesses, and individual citizens. The project equips students with analytical tools to examine topics related to language, society, and space. The Research Group is particularly open to Master’s and advanced Bachelor’s students from fields such as Linguistics, Sociolinguistics, Geography, Urban Studies, Area Studies, Anthropology, and related disciplines.
