Fungi & Fabrics
Marta Mastalerska-Scholz, Technische Universität Berlin, Architektur
Inhalte/ Contents
This seminar explores the interaction between fungal mycelium – a fungal root network – and various natural textile fabrics. Through hands-on experimentation, students will investigate how fiber type, texture, and structure influence the properties of mycelium-based composites. Within a given framework, groups formulate their own variables and hypotheses concerning size of the produced samples, added nutrients, growth temperature and duration. The research project is designed for master's students or higher bachelor's semesters who are interested in sustainability and interdisciplinary research, and welcomes participants from various disciplines, including biology, biotechnology, agricultural sciences, materials science, architecture, design, and art. No prior knowledge is necessary to participate. However, the initial experience with handcrafts, gardening, and/or cooking is expressly desired. The seminar can be conducted in English or German, according to participants’ preferences.
