What can we learn about AI, its history, problems, and potentials when we view it in relation to colonialism? How do the colonial legacies of modern technological development continue to shape the design, production, and use of AI systems? In what ways does AI reproduce or transform existing relations of colonial and neo-colonial domination? And finally, can AI itself become part of a broader project of decolonization? Our interdisciplinary research seminar explores these questions by bringing together perspectives from philosophy, sociology, science and technology studies, critical AI research, and critiques of colonialism. We will examine different perspectives on AI as a social, political, and historical phenomenon embedded in global relations of power, labor, knowledge, and extraction. We will combine close reading of important contributions from the emergent field of critical AI studies with interdisciplinary discussions and independent research. During the first half of the research seminar, we focus on developing a shared theoretical framework for understanding the relationship between AI and colonialism. Building on these perspectives, participants will then pursue their own collaborative research projects, which will be presented and discussed at a concluding research symposium. Students from the humanities, social sciences and other disciplines related to technology are specially encouraged to participate.
