Argumentative Strategies in Early Chinese Philosophy (II)

Andreas Kerschbaum, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Philosophie

Inhalte/ Contents

This X-Student Research Group explores argumentative strategies in early Chinese philosophy. It builds on last semester’s course, in which selected Confucian, Mohist and Daoist arguments were contextualised, reconstructed and presented at a workshop. Both previous and new participants are welcome. This semester, we will focus on the overarching conceptual, methodological and argumentative links between such arguments. Students will have the opportunity to specialise in a particular argument or form of argumentation, depending on their interests. Through this, participants will gain insights into different forms of reasoning, new concepts (e.g. dào 道, dé 德) and alternative philosophical formats (e.g. dialogue, parable). The research project is suitable for both advanced Bachelor’s and Master’s students. Previous engagement with Chinese philosophy or classical Chinese is welcome but not essential.
