AAA Rational Approximation in Computational Photonics II

Felix Binkowski, Freie Universität Berlin, Mathematik

Inhalte/ Contents

The AAA algorithm enables efficient approximation by rational functions and has recently attracted significant attention in numerical mathematics and various application fields. The optical response of photonic systems exhibits poles in the complex frequency plane associated with resonances, making these systems particularly well suited for rational approximation and allowing key physical quantities to be extracted directly. This project explores different types of poles arising in photonics, and investigates how the AAA algorithm can be used to compute and analyze them. Students will study the theoretical foundations of the AAA algorithm, explore different types of poles in photonic systems, implement the algorithm, and apply it to representative photonic examples. This project is intended for students with an interest in both mathematics and physics. Participants are expected to bring their own laptop to implement and independently test the AAA algorithm.
