United in Persecution? The Right-wing Elites’ Framing of Trials of Political Leaders

Christoph Anderer

This study investigates how right-wing populist party elites frame legal prosecutions of their leaders, focusing on the cases of Jair Bolsonaro (Partido Liberal, Brazil) and Marine Le Pen (Rassemblement National, France). Despite criminal allegations and formal charges, both figures have retained substantial support within their political bases. Drawing on Entman’s framing theory and literature on right-wing populist communication, this research explores the use of strategic frames, focusing on themes of victimhood, elite conspiracy, and political persecution, on the social media platform X. By conducting a qualitative content analysis, the study analyzes elite-level posts surrounding key legal events to assess whether these communications exhibit “substantial framing” and reinforce a broader “politics of fear.” The findings aim to contribute to the understanding of how far-right leaders use digital media to delegitimize legal and democratic institutions and maintain political legitimacy under legal scrutiny.
