Content and Objectives

This hands-on workshop will introduce concepts for working with research data in an efficient, reproducible, and traceable manner. The goal is to familiarize participants with various tools and to raise awareness of computational thinking, automation, and the optimization of their own work processes. The workshop is based on the educational principles of the Library Carpentry Community (https://librarycarpentry.org/). The content focuses on the following topics:

• Tidy Data in the research process
• FAIR Data and FAIR Software
• Wikidata and Linked Open Data in the FDM context
• Version control with Git and Codeberg
• No special IT knowledge is required.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the workshop, participants will be able to:

• Structure research data according to the principles of Tidy Data
• Apply the FAIR principles to data and software
• Use Wikidata as an open knowledge database in the context of research data management
• Use version control with Git and share projects via Codeberg
• Make their own work processes more reproducible

• Overview: What is tidy/structured data?
• Common formatting errors in tables

2. FAIR Data and FAIR Software

• An overview of the FAIR principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable)
• A brief introduction to FAIR Software

3. Wikidata

• Basic concepts: Items, Properties, Knowledge Graph
• Wikidata in the FDM context (e.g., Scholia)
• Querying with SPARQL

4. Version control with Git and Codeberg

• What is Git and why use version control?
• Getting started with Git on the command line
• Sharing projects and collaborating via Codeberg

• Interactive learning environment with certified instructors

• Practical exercises for immediate application in research

• Live coding and guided individual exercises

• Case studies from real-world research

Language: German

Target audience: Early-career researchers and research support staff at the Berlin University Alliance (Freie Universität Berlin, Technische Universität Berlin, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Charité). The workshop is specifically designed for participants without in-depth prior knowledge.
