FDM@BUA Online Event: Linking biological collections: data, standards, collaboration

13.05.2026 | 10:00 - 11:30

Anton Güntsch, head of the Center for Biodiversity Informatics and Collection Data Integration at the Botanic Garden Berlin, will give you an overview of the management and linkage of biological collection data in a local, national, and international context. Using the example of the Botanic Garden Berlin (Freie Universität Berlin), the diversity of biological collections will be presented—from preserved collection specimens to living collections, seeds, tissue and DNA samples, and multimedia objects—and their importance for biological research will be highlighted.

The focus is on the challenges of sustainable local collection data management, both within individual institutions and in collaborations. In addition, national and international networking approaches as well as relevant standards and infrastructures are presented. This highlights why standards alone are not sufficient and how semantic interoperability can be achieved through targeted data annotation.

Finally, current developments in the digitization of biological collections and citizen-science-based approaches to data transcription will be presented
