Description:

When faced with the challenge to implement Open Access for the publishing house of the European Mathematical Society (EMS Press) several models were evaluated.

In the mathematics community, article processing charges (APCs) are regarded as a significant barrier for authors to publish their results – which in even extends to publishing in journals that are covered by the DEAL agreements in Germany. Diamond Open Access can work for community-run journals but it introduces financial risks mid-term.

A quite new model emerged as the clear winner in the EMS Press evaluation: Subscribe to Open (S2O) extends the subscription model by publishing all articles of a subscription year as Open Access if (and only if) that year’s subscriptions reach a sustainability threshold.

The presentation gives insights into the rollout of S2O at EMS Press which drives full Open Access journal publishing since 2024. Benefits and downsides of the model are discussed based on the 5 years of experience at the press. In addition, we present a new development (Launch to Open) that offers journals a route to leave commercial publishers and continue with a community-led model by overcoming structural barriers to exit like APCs and ‘big deal’ subscription bundles.
