Painting Your Science: Watercolour Speed-Dating as a Pathway to Open Science
On 15 Oct 2025, this workshop invites participants to use watercolor painting to creatively express scientific concepts, gain new perspectives, and advance Open Science. For early-career researchers, science communicators, and all curious about merging art and science.
This workshop explores how engaging with science through visual art—specifically painting—can enhance creativity, foster problem-solving, and support the principles of Open Science. Through hands-on activities and guided reflection, participants will translate scientific concepts into visual form, stimulating lateral thinking and deepening conceptual understanding. By breaking away from linear reasoning and embracing storytelling, scientists can uncover new perspectives, improve communication with non-expert audiences, and cultivate cognitive flexibility. The workshop also serves as a space for interdisciplinary exchange, encouraging collaboration between researchers, artists, and the public. Participants will leave with a unique artistic representation of their scientific work and a renewed appreciation for creativity as a driver of open, inclusive, and innovative science.
Overview: This workshop offers a unique and playful encounter between art and science. Using watercolours as a medium, participants will explore their ongoing project creatively while engaging in a social “speed-dating” format to share and illustrate research topics. No prior artistic experience is required — just curiosity and an openness to explore.
Target audience: Early Career Researchers, science communicators, interdisciplinary educators, and anyone curious about integrating creativity into scientific practice.
