Description of Research

I investigate how humans interact with technology and AI in real-world settings, with a focus on decision-making and behavior. In my research, I treat human cognition as a central design principle and aim to develop systems that support, rather than replace, human cognition.

Where in the world has your career been largely based until now?

Mostly Berlin

Why Berlin?

I initially moved to Berlin for a master’s program that was available only in Berlin or Munich. The city`s music scene also played a role in my decision. What made me stay, though, is the range of opportunities: multiple universities, research institutions, policy, media, start-ups, and events. That keeps things interesting and also influences my work.

What fascinates you about your research area?

The diversity in this field. When studying decision-making, you get to observe how people actually behave and really understand how and why they are doing things. Developing solutions to make things easier and seeing them work, that is really fascinating.

What major short-term goal are you currently working towards with your research?

This is a somewhat vague goal, but I find it fascinating how ChatGPT and large language models can support decisions without actually providing much objective input. I’m currently testing whether this can be a new kind of decision support system - one that supports the decision process itself, rather than just giving a recommendation. Seeing the results of this project is a major short-term goal right now.

What did you want to be when you grow up?

I don’t think there was one specific dream job. I just followed my interests, tried new things, and  figured out the next step as I went along.

If you could have a radical career change for a week, what would it be?

I would be a musician and go on tour for a week. Although I’d probably be happy to return to science afterwards - so one week sounds perfect!
