Berlin Center for Global Engagement

In today’s interconnected, multipolar world, science plays a key role in shaping a sustainable future through truly global collaboration. With the Berlin Center for Global Engagement (BCGE), the Berlin University Alliance (BUA) has created a hub to develop international research partnerships—especially with the "Global South"—while addressing current trends in internationalization and advancing science diplomacy, even amid geopolitical tensions.

Signature Projects

BCGE supports projects aimed at intensifying global cooperation. Four BCGE Signature Projects are running in the period 2022–2025 adressing a wide range of topics, such as mental health or southern theory.

Hidden Research

A theatre-cum-academic research project on the topic of academic freedom. It gives theatrical life to the lived experiences of scholars at risk worldwide, revealing urgent questions of academic freedom.

Forum on Diplomatic Resilience

To strengthen international research partnerships in the face of growing geopolitical tensions, the forum builds networks and shares expertise among professionals in administration and research.

Africa Charter

The Africa Charter for Transformative Research Collaborations is a major new framework for thinking about equity in research partnerships. The Berlin University Alliance signed the Africa Charter in 2024.

Meridian

The Meridian podcast, produced by the BCGE, showcases the work of researchers addressing questions about academic freedom, science diplomacy, and cooperation between the “Global South” and the “Global North.”
