Deepening Collaboration with the Global South

The Call for Proposals of the Berlin University Alliance within the Internationalization Cross-Cutting Theme

News from Nov 15, 2021

The Berlin Center for Global Engagement (BCGE) of the Berlin University Alliance (BUA) solicits funding of research projects that support structures for cooperation with and in the 'Global South', science diplomacy or academic freedom. The deadline for applications for the Signature Projects is February 1, 2022.

Funding is provided for projects that aim to thematically deepen, interconnect, and consolidate existing collaborations and initiate scientific debates in the public through successful knowledge exchange, as well as have an impact beyond individual research questions. The funding period is July 2022 to June 2024/June 2025. The projects can receive funding of up to 105,000 euro annually. Further information about the call and application will be available on the call for proposals website.

The call for proposals builds on the first round of BCGE calls in 2020, in which 17 projects of partner institutions were selected for funding. They focus on diverse, scientifically current and socially relevant topics, from CO2 compensation in a global context to the handling of colonial university collections. Several projects build bridges to the topics "social cohesion" and "global health", which have been defined as "grand challenges" by the four partner institutions of the Berlin University Alliance.

Information events will be held on December 1 at 10 a.m. and January 14 at 11 a.m. See the links on the call for proposals website.

The Berlin University Alliance

The Berlin University Alliance is a consortium consisting of three major Berlin universities – Freie Universität Berlin, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Technische Universität Berlin – and Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin, established to shape research and education in Berlin. The four partners joined forces to further develop Berlin as a research hub with international drawing power. Together the partners explore major societal challenges, increase public outreach, promote the training of junior researchers, address issues of quality and standards in research, and share resources in the areas of research infrastructure, teaching, diversity, equal opportunities, and internationalization. The Berlin University Alliance is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the state of Berlin under the Excellence Strategy of the Federal Government and the Länder.
