Since 2022, Objective 3 – Advancing Research Quality and Value of the Berlin University Alliance has been supporting scientists and science support staff with a focus on research quality and open science through a fellowship program. Funding is available for both guest stays abroad for members of the Excellence Network and guest stays in Berlin for foreign experts. A special feature of the fellowship program is the “Guests of the Steering Committee” funding line for particularly outstanding scientists, under which Dr. Elizabeth Gadd (Loughborough University, England) and Prof. Dr. Thed van Leeuwen (Leiden University, Netherlands) are now coming to Berlin.
“We are extremely proud that Dr. Gadd and Prof. van Leeuwen have accepted the invitations to become fellows of the Steering Committee for Advancing Research Quality and Value of the Berlin University Alliance and look forward to a constructive exchange and mutual learning—not only within the Excellence Network, but with the entire Berlin research community,” says Prof. Dr. Ulrich Dirnagl, spokesperson for the Steering Committee for Advancing Research Quality and Value.
Dr. Elizabeth Gadd will join the Berlin University Alliance at the Robert Merton Center for Science Studies as an expert on research culture and research assessment, where she will advance her research on university rankings and advise the BUA on the implementation of the action plan for the Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment, among other things. CoARA is an international alliance of organizations committed to reforming the methods and procedures used to evaluate scientific performance. Prof. Dr. Thed van Leeuwen conducts research on the evaluation of science, open science, and research integrity and will advise the Open-X initiative of the Center for Open and Responsible Research (CORe) of the Excellence Alliance and Objective 3 projects such as the Berlin Science Survey and the Open Science Magnifiers Project. Both fellows will be available for professional exchange with interested colleagues during their stays in Berlin. The Center for Open and Responsible Research will be happy to arrange contacts.
