Berlin Exchange

Berlin Exchange is a network of innovative student initiatives that train students and Early Career Researchers (ECRs) through publication formats and open science offerings, enabling them to shape science in a more open, effective, and equitable way within a societal context.

Students and ECRs are the academic leaders of tomorrow! At the same time, our scientific system is lagging behind—we discuss the inaccessibility of expensive publications under the current Open Access model, the replication crisis in biomedical and psychological research, the publish or perish mentality, declining trust in research, and much more.

There is a lot to do! Let’s tackle it together, fellow students and ECRs!

Over the past three years, our events and educational offerings have reached more than 700 students and ECRs. With over 80 publications, we have demonstrated that student research and scientific critique are highly relevant and that academic publishing can be made more open and collaborative. Our publications are identifiable via DOI, and aspiring researchers take on key roles as authors, instructors, reviewers, and editors—an approach that leads to high-quality publications and courses.

Our three initiatives bring together over 40 emerging researchers from the life sciences, humanities, and social sciences. They not only provide opportunities to critically examine and actively shape academic processes but also foster interdisciplinary teamwork. To sustainably address the shortcomings of the scientific system, tomorrow’s decision-makers must be involved in key roles early on.
