Annual Conference on Academic Publishing in Europe

Berlin University Alliance assumes patronage of the APE 2021

News from Dec 09, 2020

Under the title "The new face of trust", the 16th APE (Academic Publishing in Europe) conference will be held on January 12 and 13, 2021. It will be carried out completely digitally for the first time. All sessions will be streamed and made available to participants afterwards. The Berlin University Alliance has assumed the patronage of the APE 2021. The conference language is English. Students and researchers will receive discounted tickets.

The Corona pandemic tested academic communication under stress and showed room for improvement, but also inspiration for change. A changing world has led to new solutions and new protagonists – but are these robust and have they been tested with regard to long-term trust? Under the title "The new face of trust", the APE 2021 will address questions relating to future communication, pre-prints, transparency and openness, and trust in both academic publications and the expertise of researchers.

Prof. Dr. Ulrich Dirnagl is a member of the APE-program committee. He is the director of Experimental Neurology at Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin, founding director of the QUEST Center for Transforming Biomedical Research at the Berlin Institute of Health (BIH) and member of the steering committee Objective 3: Advancing Research Quality and Value of the Berlin University Alliance. "Research quality and open science are important topics within the Berlin University Alliance. We want to promote liberalization processes in research itself as well as towards society and contribute to the improvement of research quality," says Ulrich Dirnagl. "The APE conference is a good platform to discuss and share the issues with publishing houses, companies, and politicians, as well as university members from all disciplines. That's why we, as the Berlin University Alliance, are pleased to be patrons of the APE conference." On the first day of the conference, the neurologist will moderate the panel: "Restoring Trust in Published Research". Prof. Dr. Dorothea Wagner, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and chair of the German Council of Science and Humanities, will kick-off the APE 2021 conference with the keynote "Open and Autonomous. The Basis of Trust in Science".

The conference has been held annually since 2006 and is a venue for collegial exchange on academic publishing. The target group includes representatives from publishing houses, academia, research funding, libraries, and technology companies, as well as policymakers.

The regular price for a ticket is 200 euros. There is a reduced price of 75 euros for students, researchers, and all members of the four partner institutions. The conference is organized by the Berlin Institute for Scholarly Publishing (BISP) gGmbH.
