Strategic Deepening of Cooperation: Delegation from the University of São Paulo Visits Berlin University Alliance

The new president of the University of São Paulo (USP), Prof. Dr. Aluísio Augusto Cotrim Segurado, and other high-ranking representatives of USP were received on September 18 by representatives of Berlin University Alliance (BUA), led by Prof. Dr. Julia von Blumenthal, member of the Board of Directors of the Excellence Alliance and President of Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, and Prof. Dr. Barbara Fritz, Vice President at Freie Universität Berlin in charge of international affairs. The discussions focused on expanding research collaboration and establishing it on an institutional footing. USP is the university with the strongest research program in the state of São Paulo and one of the leading universities in Latin America.

Segurado’s visit as the new rector underscores the strategic importance of the collaboration between the University of São Paulo and the Berlin University Alliance. The USP delegation also included Prof. Dr. Carlos Gilberto Carlotti Junior, Vice Rector for International Affairs; Prof. Dr. Fernando Dias Menezes de Almeida, Deputy Director for International Affairs; Prof. Dr. Juliana de Moraes Leme Basso, Deputy Director for Research Cooperation; and Prof. Dr. Samuel Rodrigues Barbosa from the School of Law.
In addition to its collaboration with USP, BUA is also intensifying its cooperation with FAPESP, the central research funding organization of the state of São Paulo. This is based on the Memorandum of Understanding signed in September 2025 between BUA and FAPESP regarding the strategic expansion of their collaboration. In an initial joint call for proposals issued by the BUA and FAPESP in early 2026, nine research projects were selected and are now getting underway. The projects focus on topics ranging from artificial intelligence and health to quantum sciences and issues of social and environmental justice. Researchers from the University of São Paulo are involved in eight of the projects.
The intensified collaboration with universities and research institutions in the state of São Paulo is based on long-standing cooperative relationships among the consortium partners—Freie Universität Berlin, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Technische Universität Berlin, and Charité—Universitätsmedizin Berlin.
