Researching together, using together: Berlin University Alliance establishes Core Facility Proteomics
New inter-university core facility strengthens Berlin's cutting-edge research in proteomics
Berlin University Alliance is strengthening Berlin's cutting-edge research by establishing a joint Core Facility Proteomics. Core facilities are central service facilities that provide researchers with access to specialized technology, equipment, and expertise. Starting in early 2026, researchers at the four alliance institutions will have access to state-of-the-art mass spectrometry technology.

The investment of one million euros is financed by funds from the federal and state governments' Excellence Strategy. The partner institutions jointly bear the operating costs, thus ensuring sustainable use. The facility follows a comprehensive strategy for establishing joint research infrastructures and serves as a pilot project for the next funding phase of the Excellence Strategy. The strategic coordination of the platform is carried out jointly by a project steering committee in which representatives of all four partner institutions work together. “With this joint platform, the BUA is strengthening Berlin's profile as an integrated knowledge and innovation hub,” says Prof. Dr. Niels Helle-Meyer, spokesperson for the BUA's Steering Committee Sharing Resources. “The Core Facility Proteomics will accelerate research, pool resources, and generate new collaborations. The project is exemplary of the shift toward jointly managed research resources in Berlin – in terms of use, operation, and financing.”
The scientific added value is considerable. Prof. Markus Ralser (Charité), scientific director of the BUA Core Facility Proteomics, emphasizes: “This platform makes it possible to analyze proteins at unprecedented speed and depth. This opens up new areas of research – from systems biology to individualized medicine – as a reliable service for the entire network.”
The Berlin clusters of excellence NeuroCure and ImmunoPreCept in particular benefit from the new infrastructure, as they rely heavily on state-of-the-art proteomic methods. Numerous other research initiatives in biochemistry, molecular biology, and medicine also gain access to a shared resource that addresses the increasing importance of quantitative proteome analysis for modern biomedical research.
The Berlin University Alliance
The Berlin University Alliance—a network of excellence comprising Freie Universität Berlin, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Technische Universität Berlin, and Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin—is positioning Berlin as one of the world’s leading knowledge and innovation hubs for integrated collaboration across various disciplines and sectors of society. Together, this ecosystem contributes to the sustainable success of major transformations. The Berlin University Alliance is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMFTR) and the State of Berlin as part of the Excellence Strategy of the German federal and state governments.
