Since receiving funding as an alliance of excellence in 2019, Freie Universität Berlin, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Technische Universität Berlin, and Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin have significantly intensified their cooperation in strategic areas such as internationalization, knowledge transfer, talent promotion, and research infrastructures. In close cooperation with the non-university research institutions of Berlin Research 50 (BR50) and numerous partners from the arts and culture, communication, business, politics, and civil society, an integrated research space has been created that sustainably promotes interdisciplinary research and teaching. The Berlin University Alliance is once again pursuing ambitious goals and shaping the further development of the alliance in a targeted manner – with six fields of action and three cross-cutting themes.
"The Berlin University Alliance presents itself as a dynamic network of scientific excellence – supported by cooperation, strategic vision, and a dedicated team that prepares the evaluation with great care. The alliance has established itself as a forward-looking, adaptive player and has sustainably strengthened Berlin's position as a center of knowledge and innovation in international competition," says Prof. Dr. Günter M. Ziegler, spokesperson for the Berlin University Alliance and president of Freie Universität Berlin.
The assessment of the Alliance of Excellence by an international panel of experts will take place on November 4 and 5, 2025, in Berlin. The Excellence Commission will decide on the continued funding of the Berlin University Alliance on March 10/11, 2026. Starting on January 1, 2027, a maximum of 15 universities or alliances will receive funding for a period of seven years in the second phase of the Excellence Strategy competition.
