Tracing Uranium: Critical Cartographies of a Toxic Heritage

Ryn Delgado, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Asien- Afrikawissenschaften

Inhalte/ Contents

Central to both nuclear weapons and nuclear power, uranium has a long history of entanglement with colonialism, toxicity and environmental degradation. This project sets out to trace the social lives and afterlives of uranium, from mining to nuclear processes to waste, and to document the ways in which the toxic heritage of uranium is unequally distributed. In the context of a looming nuclear arms race and debates about energy sovereignty, this project is of pressing and immediate relevance. We’ll use countermapping as a methodology to examine and visualize the paths uranium takes, and as a tool to reclaim spaces impacted by uranium. We’ll develop our countermapping practice through workshops with artists and scholars, and curate our results to share in an exhibition. The course is open to advanced BA and MA students in social sciences or humanities. Students with an academic focus or personal interest in regions impacted by uranium are especially invited to participate.
