Reimagining Al-Andalus: Otherness and Identity in Spain

Alejandro Manjon Aspe, Freie Universität Berlin, Ostasien und Vorderer Orient (WE 4)

Inhalte/ Contents

How are Muslim and Jewish communities portrayed in contemporary Spain? Although Spain’s cultural fabric is woven from multiconfessional threads, the country's self-image is predominantly Christian. Within this framework, references to Islam and Judaism are often conveyed through selective historical narratives in which Al-Andalus emerges as a subtle yet recurring motif throughout Spain's cultural, legal and political landscape. This semester, we will examine how the identities of religious minorities are invoked and framed within established state structures, relying on citizenship laws, visual arts and pop songs to give us an insight into how these mechanisms work. While the X-Tutorial primarily focuses on the modern Spanish reception of Al-Andalus, students are encouraged to expand their research beyond Spain, engaging with various thematic fields such as visual culture, architecture, politics, law, gender studies, and literature, to name a few.  Students will play a central role in shaping the topics to be discussed. During the first session, we will collectively decide on the language in which the X-Tutorial will be conducted.
