In the week of the Oxford-Berlin symposium between 29 September and 2 October, researchers from Oxford and Berlin will hold various joint workshops in different fields of research.
“Weary Worlding: Anthropology, Performance and the Spectre of Radical Alterity” (Laboratory Workshop)
Date: Monday, 29 September, 9 am – 7 pm
Venue: Owen Walker Room, Oriel College, Oxford OX1 4EW
Organisers/Convenors: Dr. Lindsey Drury (FU Berlin), Dr. Jonas Tinius (HU Berlin)
Format: On-site only
This workshop explores the concept of radical alterity at the intersection of anthropology and performance, examining how archives, case studies, and artistic practices shape our understanding of sameness, difference, and incommensurable worlds. The workshop is not open to the public, but if you are interested in participating, please get in touch with the organisers via oxber@berlin-university-alliance.com (your email will be forwarded).
“Indebtedness and Reparations in a (post)colonial world”
Date: 29th September 2025
Venue: University of Oxford, UK (workshop by invitation)
Organisers: Laura Kotzur (FU Berlin), Mariam Salehi (FU Berlin), Sabrina Keller (Humboldt University), Meera Sabaratnam (University of Oxford)
Format: On-site only
Struggles for justice in our (post)colonial world are fundamentally shaped by contestations over who owes what to whom. In this one-day workshop, participants are invited to discuss the intersections of order and justice in a (post)colonial world through the lenses of indebtedness and reparations. By linking multiple examples and case studies globally, the aim is to foster interdisciplinary debates on how debt and repair are interlinked in specific sites of struggle and on a global scale.
Participation by invitation

"Energy Workshop"
Date: 1 October, 9:00 am - 3:00 pm
Venue: Jack Paton Room in the Physics Department.
Format: On-site only
Energies and battery technologies were highlighted as key topics in the 2024 UK-Germany Science & Innovation Bilateral Dialogue, of strategic importance to both the BUA and the University of Oxford. Building on this priority, scientists from Technical, Humboldt and Oxford universities will attend a joint workshop in on 01.10 to exchange knowledge, showcase advances in solar energy, batteries, and inorganic chemistry, and explore joint projects. Activities include discussions on sustainability solutions, infrastructure sharing, and emerging scientific trends. The event is open to external scientists from 1:00-3:00 pm. For further organisation contact fatemeh.nejati@tu-berlin.de
“AI Workshop”
Date: 1 October, 9:00 am - 6:00 pm
Venue: St John’s College.
Format: On-site only
A full-day workshop will bring together researchers in AI, automated labs, and modelling from TU Berlin (Prof. Reiner Stark’s group and Kiwi Biolab), and Oxford (Prof. Mark Cannon group as well as researchers from the Control Group and Machine Learning, and Siemens Digital Industries). The workshop will explore AI and machine learning for optimising industrial testing scenarios, with a focus on enhancing simulation accuracy in digital twin and hardware-in-the-loop environments under extreme or uncertain conditions. The discussions will consider related topics such as systematic design optimisation and AI-assisted code generation. The meeting will feature additional Oxford AI and control experts, broadening the collaborative network. Aligned with the UK-German Joint Declaration of Intent on AI and Horizon Europe priorities, the project lays the groundwork for joint publications, third-party funding applications, and enhanced student supervision opportunities.
The event will strengthen collaboration and shape future joint projects. The event welcomes external scientists from 2:00-4:00 pm. For further organisation contact fatemeh.nejati@tu-berlin.de
