Science today faces significant challenges: public trust in research is declining, populist movements are gaining influence, and academic freedom is under pressure in many countries. In this context, global strategic research collaborations are becoming increasingly important. They offer structured opportunities for joint projects, open new perspectives, and contribute to solving pressing global issues. Cooperation with partners in the Global South is particularly relevant, as it supports more balanced scientific relationships and helps safeguard academic freedom.

The Berlin University Alliance (BUA) addresses these challenges through its cross-cutting objective of internationalization. Strategic partnerships play a central role: collaboration with the University of Oxford fosters cutting-edge research within the Oxford–Berlin Research Partnership; the partnership with the University of Melbourne connects Berlin to another leading research hub while enhancing international visibility; and cooperation with Singapore builds vital bridges between Europe and Southeast Asia, promoting intercultural exchange and broadening research perspectives.

These partnerships are supported by the Center for Global Engagement, which serves as a central platform for cooperation with the Global South. It promotes diversity and excellence in research while strengthening international academic collaboration. In this way, internationalization within the BUA contributes to a globally connected, diverse, and sustainable research environment in Berlin.
