The German Research Foundation (DFG) has approved three Berlin proposals for Research Training Groups to promote early career researchers:

The Research Training Group “Differential Equation- and Data-Based Models in the Life Sciences and Fluid Dynamics (DAEDALUS)” at Technische Universität Berlin will provide interdisciplinary training for doctoral students in the fields of mathematics and data science. Researchers from Freie Universität Berlin are also involved in the group, which will begin its work in October 2018. Professor Dr. Gitta Kutyniok from Technische Universität Berlin is the spokesperson.

Secure findings for a science of inner experience – psychology – can be gained through self-observation, i.e., introspection, or through external observation, also known as extrospection. The latter was long considered insufficient. The Research Training Group “Extrospection. External Access to Higher Cognitive Processes” at Humboldt–Universität zu Berlin is therefore dedicated to the question of how external scientific access to higher cognitive processes can be achieved at the interface of philosophy, psychology, psychiatry, and neuroscience. Professor Dr. Michael Pauen is this research group’s spokesperson.

Humboldt-Universität also applied for the International Research Training Group (IGK) “Analysis and Reconstruction of the Regulatory Genome.” The aim of the project is to identify and characterize the regulatory processes and DNA sequences that determine the activity of gene expression in eukaryotes. The researchers in Berlin and Durham, North Carolina, use experimental high-throughput methods to analyze the large amounts of data obtained using computer science methods. Professor Dr. Uwe Ohler from the Institute of Bioinformatics at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin is the spokesperson for this International Research Training Group.
