The Einstein Foundation Berlin has designated three graduate schools in Berlin as Einstein Doctoral Programmes. The awards were presented on January 18, 2018, during the annual New Year's reception of the Einstein Foundation in the Altes Stadthaus ("Old City Hall") in Berlin.
The Berlin Graduate School Muslim Cultures and Societies, operated by Freie Universität in cooperation with Humboldt-Universität, is devoted to the study of Muslim-influenced societies worldwide. It received the first prize, a grant of 150,000 euros annually for three years.
The second prize went to the Graduate School of North American Studies (GSNAS) at Freie Universität and the third prize to Berlin Mathematical School (BMS), which is run jointly by Technische Universität, Freie Universität, and Humboldt-Universität. They will receive 100,000 euros (second place) and 75,000 euros (third place) annually for three years.
The prize money is intended to increase the scope of the doctoral programs as well as for structural development. The awards should help make the attractiveness of doctoral training in Berlin more visible internationally.
