Excellence Strategy of the German Government

The Berlin University Alliance is an alliance of excellence funded by the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR) and the state of Berlin as part of the Excellence Strategy of the federal and state governments. The four Berlin Alliance partners - Freie Universität Berlin, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Technische Universität Berlin and Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin - won the funding with their proposal Crossing Boundaries toward an Integrated Research Environment. Funding began on November 1, 2019.

In the first funding line of the new round of the research competition, the Berlin partners acquired 5 Clusters of Excellence for funding on May 22, 2025. The interdisciplinary research projects will initially be funded for seven years from 2026. An extension of the funding for a further seven years is possible on the basis of a continuation application.
