ECPD Lecture Series. Family Diversity and Care Contexts: Who Provides Family and Non-Family Care in Europe?

Mar 19, 2026 | 04:00 PM - 05:00 PM

How are individuals’ kinship structures associated with providing unpaid care to family members and non-family persons, and how do these associations differ across care contexts? Using SHARE data from 28 countries, the study shows that adults aged 50 years or older without partners or children are more likely to provide non-family care than individuals who live with a partner, have children, or both, but that strong family care norms suppress non-family caregiving, while more generous formal care policies are associated with higher levels of non-family care regardless of kinship structure.

The event is addressed to scienctific audience and the general public.
