Competition Terms and Conditions
1. The competition
1.1 The title of the competition is Love Oxford-Berlin Photo Competition
1.2 The competition is run by the Berlin University Alliance, a consortium consisting of Freie Universität Berlin, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, and Technische Universität Berlin, together with Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin. 1.3 To enter the competition, students from Freie Universität Berlin, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Technische Universität Berlin, or Charité – Universitätsmedizin must upload a photo to Instagram, Facebook or Twitter using the hashtags #LoveOXBER and #BerlinUAlliance that demonstrates support for the local or larger community.
1.4 The competition will run from 00:01 on Monday 3rd February (the opening date) to 23:59 on Sunday 16th February (the closing date).
1.5 All competition entries must be posted to Instagram, Facebook or Twitter using the hashtags #LoveOXBER and #BerlinUAlliance showing how the participants support the community. All competition entries posted before the opening date and/or after the closing date, and/or without the aforementioned hashtags will be automatically disqualified.
1.6 By submitting a competition entry, you are agreeing to be bound by these terms and conditions.
1.7 The competition entries will be judged by a panel of judges based on their aesthetic quality, originality, and relevance of the image and caption to the competition’s theme. The winners will be informed by comment or message function.
2.1 The competition is only open to current students of the Freie Universität Berlin, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Technische Universität Berlin, and Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin who are over 18 years of age.
2.2 By entering the competition, you confirm that you are eligible to do so and eligible to claim the prize. The Berlin University Alliance may require you to provide proof that you are eligible to enter the competition.
2.3 Participation using false identities or the identities of third persons is not permitted. The Berlin University Alliance reserves the right to exclude participants from the photo competition who infringe the Competition Terms and Conditions.
2.4 Participants of winning entries agree to being informed thereof by comment or message (Instagram, Facebook or Twitter) with the name provided.
3. Regulations for Participation
3.1 Participation is only possible on submission of a photo and accompanying text using the following option:
Uploading the photo and accompanying text to Instagram, Facebook or Twitter using the hashtags #LoveOXBER and #BerlinUAlliance
3.2 There is no limit to the number of entries per person.
3.3 Only public profiles or publicly visible images can be used to participate. Private profiles are not visible for the organizers. By using the hashtags #LoveOXBER and #BerlinUAlliance you are agreeing to the Competition Terms and Conditions.
3.4 In the event of an infringement of the Competition Terms and Conditions or an attempt at technical manipulation, participants may be excluded from the competition. In such cases, it is also possible that prizes awarded could subsequently be withdrawn or recalled.
4. Copyright and Right of Publicity
4.1 The participant guarantees that they possess all rights to the photo they are submitting for the competition, including the exclusive rights to any commercial use thereof, that third parties do not hold any rights to the images and that the depicting of persons does not infringe on any publicity rights.
4.2 Should one or more persons be identifiable in the photo, the involved parties must provide publication consent. Should, despite this, any third party still claim an infringement of rights, the participant hereby exempts the organizer from all liability.
4.3 The Berlin University Alliance reserves the right to delete any images, which include or depict insults, racism, hate propaganda, pornography and obscenity, or incitements to violence against persons, institutions or businesses.
5. Granting of Rights
5.1 Participants grant the Freie Universität Berlin, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Technische Universität Berlin, and Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin the right to make use of and publish the photos submitted to the competition as per the terms of a Creative Commons – Attribution license 4.0 (CC BY 4.0). The rights of authors are protected by the attribution requirement.
6.1 The first prize is a trip to the University of Oxford for two persons. It includes the following:
- Flights OR train tickets from Berlin to London (economy class) and back
- Transportation from central London to Oxford and back
- Three nights’ hotel accommodation in Oxford
- 40 Euros daily allowance
- Entrance to the Science and Ideas Festival 2020
Three runners-up will each receive a book voucher to the value of 50 euros.
6.2 The prize is non-transferable and can be neither exchanged nor paid out in cash.
6.3 The trip must coincide with the Science and Ideas Festival 2020, which will take place from 16th October until 26th October 2020.
6.4 The person traveling with the winner to the University of Oxford must be enrolled as a student at Freie Universität Berlin, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Technische Universität Berlin or Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin.
6.5 The prize does not include travel insurance, tax or additional personal expenses. Any further costs incurred in addition to those detailed above and that are incidental to the fulfilment of the prize are the responsibility of the winner(s).
6.6 The winner will be responsible for ensuring that she/he and any accompanying person are available to travel and hold valid passports, necessary visas and travel documents for the trip in question on the travel dates specified.
6.7 The prize is supplied by the Berlin University Alliance, which reserves the right to replace the prize with an alternative prize of equal or higher value if circumstances beyond its control arise.
6.8 The competition organizers will contact the winner(s) by the comment or message function (Instagram, Facebook or Twitter). If the winner does not respond within five working days of this notification, they forfeit their right to the prize irrevocably.
7.1 The owners of the winning social media account will be contacted after the judges have made a decision. The account owners will be asked to send an email from their university email address confirming their status as a current student of either Freie Universität Berlin, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Technische Universität Berlin or Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin.
7.2 The Berlin University Alliance will make information available that guarantees that a valid award took place.
8. Prize Claiming
8.1 The prize winner has five working days from the announcement date to confirm student status and claim the prize. If the prize winner does not claim the prize by this date, their claim will become invalid.
8.2 The prize may not be claimed by a third party on your behalf.
8.3 The Berlin University Alliance will make all reasonable efforts to contact the winner. If the winner cannot be contacted, is not available, or has not confirmed their student status within five working days of the announcement date, the Berlin University Alliance reserves the right to offer the prize to the next eligible entrant selected from the eligible entries that were received before the closing date.
8.4 The Berlin University Alliance does not accept any responsibility for the case that the winner is not able to accept the prize.
9. Data Privacy Statement
9.1 The participant agrees to storage, processing and transmission by the Berlin University Alliance of the data provided for the purposes of participating in the competition, as far as this information is required and appropriate for the competition. No data is to be passed on to third parties for other purposes.
9.2 Participants’ data is to be used exclusively for the purposes of the competition and thereafter deleted. The regulations regarding data protection can be found at:

10. Liability Notice
10.1 The Berlin University Alliance reserves the right to alter the Competition Terms and Conditions at any time or to discontinue the competition at any time without notice and without providing a reason. The Berlin University Alliance accepts no liability for loss of winning chances resulting from connection problems or malfunctions on the part of Instagram, Facebook or Twitter arising from technical issues, or for technical problems when sending emails.
11. Final Provisions
11.1 Legal recourse is excluded.
11.2 The competition is in no way connected to Instagram, Facebook or Twitter and is neither organized or supported by Instagram, Facebook or Twitter. Participants cannot make any claims against Instagram, Facebook or Twitter as a consequence of participation in this competition.
11.3 Should individual clauses of the Competition Terms and Conditions be, or become, void or unenforceable, the validity of the remaining clauses remains unaffected.
