HDF5 as the single interface: a FAIR, automated pipeline from fixed-bed experiment to Particle Resolved CFD simulation

Poster

Alexander Nicolai, Dr.-Ing. Lutz Böhm (TU Berlin)

Fixed-bed reactors are central to a wide range of industrial processes, yet their thermal and hydrodynamic design still rests largely on empirical correlations. Particle-resolved computational fluid dynamics (PRCFD) provides access to the underlying transport mechanisms, but it is only as reliable as the experimental data used to validate it. In a joint project, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology conducts the experimental work and Technische Universität Berlin the numerical work. This contribution presents the workflow that connects the two. The entire chain, from the specification of the test rig through data cleaning and labelling to the completed CFD simulation, has been consolidated into a largely automated pipeline built on the FAIR principles. Storage and exchange rest on the Hierarchical Data Format (HDF5). A single file describes the test rig completely and drives the simulation chain. The poster maps this workflow onto the individual FAIR principles, marks the steps still outstanding and invites discussion on how the link between experimental and simulative data of this volume can be stored and made sustainably reusable.
