Using ellipsometry as an example, we demonstrate how traceable and reproducible data flows can be established as early as the basic physics lab course through appropriate metadata structures, instrument integration, and standardized data storage.

An ellipsometry experiment is being constructed around research data management in a heterogeneous laboratory environment as a central teaching objective. Different experimental configurations and measurement strategies generate data whose interpretation - and thus reusability- depend heavily on the structure and completeness of the associated metadata.

A Python-based user interface is designed to standardize the collection of measurement data and experimental parameters, integrate various laboratory instruments and custom-developed detectors, and enable the structured storage of data in an electronic laboratory notebook. Students can then visualize and analyze current and prior measurements using pre-configured Jupyter Notebooks.
